This anthological volume is dedicated to the art of painting in pre-independence Bolivia, prompted by the belief that a compendium of handsomely photographed, full-color images will bring renewed public and scholarly attention to a rich cultural heritage that has not received its due. An ambitious round of new photography has been joined by an international roster of scholarly contributors from the United States, Argentina, Peru, and Bolivia to offer both the general reader and specialists an overview of the art of painting in the region of South America once called "Charcas" and later "Alto Perú." Attention is brought to the role of European subjects and styles in the development of regional forms of expression, as well as the influence of art and artists from Cuzco, Peru. Works by painters active in La Paz, Sucre, and Potosí such as Leonardo Flores, Melchor Pérez Holguín, and Gaspar Miguel de Berrío have received close reading of iconographical themes that were often of particularly local interest.

About the Editor:

From the mid-1970s Suzanne L. Stratton-Pruitt has taught, published, and curated exhibitions about Spanish Early Modern art, for which she was awarded the Lazo de Dama de la Orden de Isabel la Católica. Since 2003 she has focused on Spanish colonial art, co-editing with Joseph J. Rishel the catalogue of the exhibition The Arts in Latin America 1492-1820 (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2006). As curator of the Carl and Marilynn Thoma Collection of Spanish Colonial Painting, she organized the exhibition catalogue The Virgin, Saints, and Angels: South American Paintings 1600-1825 from the Thoma Collection (Milan: Skira editore, 2006). Stratton-Pruitt edited The Art of Painting in Colonial Quito/El arte de la pintura en Quito colonial (Philadelphia: Saint Joseph's University Press, 2012) as well as Journeys to New Worlds: Spanish and Portuguese Colonial Art in the Roberta and Richard Huber Collection (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2013), and she wrote about "Paintings in the Home in Spanish Colonial America" for the catalogue of the exhibition Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish-American Home 1492-1898 (Brooklyn Museum, 2013).

“This sumptuous book, which was sponsored by the Hispanic Society Museum and Library, New York, comprises a collection of fully illustrated scholarly essays by a range of eminent experts in the field, exploring and explaining painting in Bolivia from the sixteenth to the end of the eighteenth century. […] There is a useful Index and comprehensive Bibliography, and the illustrations are of a uniformly high standard; the design is exemplary. The verbal information, scholarly but clearly written, is presented as parallel texts in English and Spanish. The English translations are fluently written, and a pleasure to read. […] [T]his is a fine book, which must be an essential reference work for any scholar or student in this area. Suzanne Stratton-Pruitt is to be congratulated for having produced a highly attractive book. Bolivian art has been given the attention it rightly deserves.”
Holly Trusted (Victoria and Albert Museum, London) Bulletin of Spanish Visual Studies 2 (2018)

“Written by a team of prominent North and South American art historians, this volume represents the first comprehensive study of painting in colonial Bolivia from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. […] [T]he editor and all the contributors are to be commended for the breadth and depth of their essays and iconographical studies. With over 500 illustrations, all in color and many previously unpublished elsewhere, this anthology will prove to be not only indispensable for specialists in viceregal art but also of interest to students and general readers. Published in a bilingual edition, it is very accessible to both English- and Spanish-speaking audiences.”
Lisandra Estevez (Winston-Salem State University), Renaissance Quarterly

“This lavishly illustrated bilingual volume is the second in a series edited by Suzanne L. Stratton-Pruitt to explore colonial painting in a region of South America. This anthology offers fourteen in-depth essays on painting in colonial Bolivia written by established and emerging scholars from across the Americas, and includes a second section of twenty-one focused iconographical studies. More than 400 high-quality color plates—many illustrating works not previously published—display the remarkably varied, complex, and visually opulent characteristics of painting in Bolivia (in this period, part of the Viceroyalty of Peru, and later that of La Plata) from the sixteenth through the eighteenth century. […] [T]he volume will appeal to students and general readers and will serve as a major scholarly reference for years to come.”
Susan Verdi Webster (College of William & Mary), Renaissance and Reformation
